For the past four months, COVID-19 has dominated our minds. Everywhere you turn, there are reminders that we are living in the midst of a crisis, where simply being around others can pose a threat to ourselves and our loved ones. It is nearly impossible to find one section of our lives that has been unchanged by this pandemic. One of the most affected groups are this year's class of graduating seniors
Senior year is something that is anticipated from the very moment a student begins their academic journeys. It comes with untouchable milestones that these students will work towards. However, the most important of these milestones- particularly prom and graduation- have been suddenly removed from the picture. The very core of these events- the comradary and celebration of a group of peers who have worked side by side for over a decade- suddenly have made these events hazardous.
COVID-19 has robbed the class of 2020 of these moments, instead leaving them with an unceremonious send off into adult life. But this class of incredible students will not allow this to happen. Instead, they have innovated new ways to acknowledge their hard work and close this portion of their life with incredible joy.
Last week, I was asked by a group of high school seniors to take their senior portraits. We met on the high school track, an outdoor space where they could safely gather. There, they donned their caps and gowns, straightened their tassels, and took turns posing. Their dresses were beautiful, their caps were decorated, and their excitement was palpable. I was struck by their initiative and the strength of their connection to each other. This pandemic did not separate them. They found ways to become closer than ever.
In them, I see strength, hope, and relentless positiviity. They did not simply let this pandemic take their joy. They found ways to preserve this celebration and the bonds they have made with their peers. Photography is a medium that specializes in capturing these moments. I am so grateful that I could help to be a part of this transition in their lives. Through these pictures, they have created a living document to their incredible drive and hope for the future.
